MIDI
Last updated: 26 November 2024
Overview
SOLOstudio® PRO just got a whole lot more powerful.
With our new MIDI cue option you have the ability to add MIDI cues that are sent over network to any other device you wish, triggering any host of special effects from lighting, lasers, smoke machines… Anything that accepts a midi command! #GameChanger
Our new MIDI cues allow you to select any 1 of 10 Notes, on any 1 of 10 Octaves over 16 possible Channels.. That’s over 1600 unique combinations to send specific MIDI commands!
All MIDI cues in SOLOstudio® PRO are sent as ‘Single Shot’ ie: Note on, followed by Note off in quick succession.
The world of possibilities this opens up is now infinite and we’re excited to share with you this incredible new upgrade to SOLOstudio® PRO.
Instructions
Be sure to have all devices connected to the same network to use MIDI over Network. For USB mode click here. You MUST be a PRO user to use this feature.
1) First, let’s add this upgrade to your SOLOstudio® app. Click the icon to add a new cue and then tap, ‘Upgrades ‘ – This will take you to the Upgrade Marketplace.
2) Purchase the ‘MIDI’ upgrade.
3) Once you’ve made a purchase in the Upgrade Marketplace a new settings page will be made available to you in the top right hand corner of the Upgrade Marketplace page.
4) Inside this settings area you’ll have the ability to ‘Enable MIDI service’ – This must be enabled or your recieivng device will not be able to find your iPhone/iPad
5) On your Mac open ‘Audio Midi Setup’ – Then in the top menu, select Window and then ‘Show Midi Studio’
6) The MIDI studio will pop open. Tap the globe icon. Another box pops open.
7) In this box, on the top left under ‘My Sessions’ click the ‘+’ icon to start a new session.
8) Below in the ‘My Sessions & Directories’ the iPhone/iPad should be visible with this device name. Tap it to select and click ‘Connect’ The iPad/iPhone will now be added to the session on the right hand side.
9) You’re now ready to set up MIDI cues in SOLOstudio PRO® and send these commands to your receiving Mac device. Open up your software and set the corresponding MIDI commands to those set up in SOLOstudio® PRO. If using Qlab, note that it has a ‘Listen’ function to auto store MIDI commands to cues that it ‘hears’ over the network.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION – PLEASE READ:
1) You must be connected to the same network to use this feature
2) Please ensure that you fully understand how to use and implement MIDI commands in both SOLOstudio® PRO AND your chosen software before implementing it into a live show.
3) We recommend to use the ‘Keep Screen Awake’ function in SOLOstudio® PRO on your iPad / iPhone to avoid your device from becoming disconnected from your MIDI session.
MIDI via USB (Mac only)
1) To use a wired connection, simply direct connect your iPad running SOLOstudio® PRO to your Mac using a USBC cable.
2) Your iPad will ask if you trust your Mac. Click ‘Trust’.
3) Open Audio Midi Setup and your iPad/iPhone will now be listed in the left hand panel.
4) Click ‘Enable’ and you will be prompted to connect to this device. Click ‘Allow.’
5) Your device is now directly sending MIDI via USB to your Mac.
WINDOWS PC USERS
You can only send MIDI over Network (and not via USB). This is a Windows PC limitation.
In order to use Midi over Network with PC you will need to install rtpMIDI by Tobias Erichsen and then follow the same over network process as Mac users to connect to your device running SOLOstudio® PRO (the only difference is you’ll need to open rtpMIDI rather than Mac’s ‘Audio Midi Setup’.
